The Low Income Weatherization Program was mandated by Congress to reduce the effect of higher heating costs of low income families and to cut energy consumption nationwide. Human Services, Inc (HSI) provides weatherization for Bartholomew, Johnson, Shelby, Decatur, and Jackson counties. Households may receive work on their home, at no cost, which will save energy consumption. Typical services include: inspections, repairs, insulation, air sealing, and sometimes replacement of heating systems and hot water heaters. Households are served by a priority system. Commonly Asked Questions: Now that I have applied for weatherization, What's next? The inspector will contact you according to your priority and the length of time you have been on the waiting list. If your house is not weatherized within the year following your application, you will be contacted by the local weatherization office and asked to reapply. The local inspector will be setting up a date and time to inspect your home and plan the work. What will the inspector do when He/She comes to my house? The inspector will check for exiting insulation in your homes attic, walls and crawl space. He/She will also check any gas application, including your kitchen stove, furnace, and water heater to determine if they are in good working condition and safe. If your home has a structural problem which disqualifies if for weatherization, The inspector will inform you of that while he is there. Examples of what those problems could be are: leaky roof, unstable foundation, plumbing leaks. You will be given an opportunity to correct the disqualifying problem and receive weatherization when the repair is completed. What happens next? One of the crew Supervisors will call you and tell you that they are ready to come work on your home. If the inspector determines that you have a gas appliance which needs service, the Supervisor who calls you will be from the furnace crew. He will arrange a time when he can service your gas appliance. If your furnace needs repair or cleaning, he will also do that. After the work is completed, your home will be scheduled for the insulation work and the insulation crew Supervisor will contact your. As you can tell, being able to contact you is very important. If you do not have phone service, you will receive a letter in the mail asking you to contact HSI. The phone number is 812-372-8407 or contact your local office. If you have email, you can be contacted via the internet if you inform us of your email address. How long will it be after the inspector inspects my house before the work is started? If there is not a delay due to availability of materials, you can expect to be contacted within six weeks after He/She has been there. If it has been more than 6 weeks, call your local office to ask for information. Please feel free to ask questions all through the weatherization process. It is Human Services hope that you will be very happy with the weatherization of your home and expect you to let the guys know if you do not want something done. Will someone inspect the work they do? The inspector will come back after the weatherization is completed to inspect the work and retest your furnace. If you have any questions, ask the inspector at that time or call your local office. You will need to be home at the inspection to sign a paper. Will HSI Come out if I have an emergency? If you have an emergency situation that is the result of Weatherization having been done on your home within the last 60 days. Call us immediately. The Weatherization Program guarantees the work for 60 days from date of final inspection. If you received a new furnace, it is guaranteed for one year from the date the furnace was installed. HSI staff does not work evenings, Saturday, or Sunday Does it make a difference whether I rent or own my home? If you rent your home, you will receive all Weatherization measures except replacement of appliances. If your furnace, water heater, or cooking stove need to be replaced, your landlord will be notified. What are the income guidelines for weatherization assistance? A one person family can't have an annual income of over $15,600. For larger families, add $5400 for each additional family member.
