Women, Infants & Children (WIC)

Women, Infants & Children (WIC)

What is WIC?

WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC is a federally-funded nutrition program that provides food checks, nutrition counseling, and community referrals to pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants and children up to five years of age in Shelby, Decatur, Brown and surrounding Indiana counties.

WIC is designed to improve fetal development, reduce the incidence of low birth weight and premature births, reduce maternal and childhood anemia, and promote breastfeeding.

The WIC program helps families like yours start strong, improve health and assist you with putting nutritious foods on your table. We give you checks you can use to get free nutritious foods. We are a nutritional based, supplemental food program, whom guides our families on healthy eating habits.

Who can participate in the WIC Program?

• Pregnant women

• Breastfeeding moms (up to baby’s 1st birthday)

• Non-Breastfeeding Postpartum moms (up to 6 months after delivery)

• Infants (up to 1st birthday)

• Children up to the age of five years old

You must live in Indiana and meet income guidelines. Check the income chart here to see if your family may qualify. When you apply, you’ll receive a personalized nutrition assessment and speak with a dietitian to help assist you with your nutritional needs.

Families already receiving Medicaid, Food Stamps, and TANF are income eligible for the WIC program.

What does WIC do?

We help you make healthy choices for your family while providing vouchers for foods for your families. We have dietitians on staff that support or assist any breastfeeding mothers.

How do I sign up?

Call your local WIC Clinic, you will be pre-screened over the phone and an appointment will be made for you.
